Yang Wood Day Master — 甲 (jiǎ)

The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar: the sign that stands for you in a BaZi chart, the one every other sign is read against. There are ten of them, each element in a yang and a yin form. If you do not know yours yet, the calculator finds it from your birth date, time and place in a few seconds.

Traditional image

The tradition pictures Yang Wood as a tall tree: a trunk that grows straight up, roots that hold the ground, a crown that gives shade. It wants open sky and does not bend easily. In the classical texts the tree needs rain to grow and the sun to ripen; it fears the axe, yet the same axe turns timber into something useful, which is why Yang Wood is read as a sign that gains shape from discipline rather than from comfort.

Three traits in this system

In this system a Yang Wood Day Master is read as a chart with these leanings:

This is a reading by the rules of the system, for reflection and planning, not a statement about you. How much of it shows depends on the rest of the chart.

What supports it and what draws on it

Wood is fed by Water: signs of Wood and Water in the chart support a Yang Wood Day Master. Fire is what it produces, Earth is what it controls, and Metal is what controls it: these three draw on it. In the app each of these relations has a name among the ten gods, and the library explains every one of them.

Wood is in season from the start of spring in the traditional calendar (around 4 February) to early April. In this system the month of birth weighs most in the strength of the Day Master, so a Yang Wood Day Master born in its own season starts with the strongest support.

Strong or weak

In this system a Yang Wood Day Master is read through growth and direction: the chart is asked whether the tree has water to drink, sun to reach for and room to grow. With strong support it is read as a chart that pushes upward and takes the lead; with little support it is read as a tree in a dry season, where the planner looks for the periods that bring water and warmth.

How the app decides: it looks at the season of the month branch, at the roots of the Day Master's element among the stems hidden in the earthly branches, and at how many open signs support it against how many draw on it. The thresholds are published on the calculation method page, and next to every rating the app shows “why I see this”.

Its counterpart

Yang Wood is the yang form of Wood; the yin form is Yin Wood. The two share an element and a season but are read through different images.

Find your Day Master

The calculator runs the same engine as the BaziArt app and does not store your birth data. The app adds the planner, the hour windows and the full chart with “why I see this” under every term.
