Calculation method
In Chinese metaphysics many rules come in school variants: where the day boundary falls, which hidden stems a branch holds, how the strength of the Day Master is judged, which palace takes the centre of a Qi Men chart. The BaziArt engine makes one choice at every such point, and this page lists every choice where the canon allows a different reading: what is implemented and why. These are the same rules the app uses to write “why I see this” next to every rating. The page is written for practitioners: terms are given in the original with pinyin. The weights, coefficients, thresholds and scores are part of the author's method and are not given here.
It describes how the system calculates, not what follows from it for a person: in this system a period or an hour is considered favourable or calling for care, and the decision stays with you.
Time and calendar
- True solar time (真太阳时, zhēn tàiyáng shí) is applied by default to the day and hour pillars: the longitude of the place gives a correction of 4 minutes per degree, and the equation of time after Meeus (“Astronomical Algorithms”, chapter 28) is added to it, accurate to seconds. It can be switched off in the calculation settings; the pillars are then taken from zone time.
- Solar terms (节气, jiéqì) are astronomical moments, compared in absolute time rather than by calendar date. The year changes at 立春 (lìchūn); the month changes at the twelve sectional terms (节, jié), not at the middle terms (中气, zhōngqì).
- Day boundary — 23:00 (子初换日, zǐ chū huàn rì; the early-子 school, 早子时, zǎo zǐ shí): the whole 子 double hour belongs to the next day. The midnight school (00:00) is available in the calculation settings; the choice is stored with the chart.
- The hour pillar after 23:00 is the same in both modes: the hour stem runs from the next day's stem. With the 23:00 boundary that day has already begun, so the day pillar is the next day's too. With the midnight boundary the day is still the previous one, and the rule “晚子時:日柱不變,時柱按次日干起” applies: the day pillar does not change, while the hour stem is taken from the next day. A birth at 23:30 therefore gets one hour pillar in both modes and different day pillars. BaZi and Qi Men count it the same way.
- The time zone on input must be an IANA name (for example Europe/Belgrade). An unknown name is a calculation error, not a silent fallback to UTC; historical clock changes come from the time-zone database for the date of birth.
BaZi (八字)
Hidden stems (藏干, cánggān)
The main table follows the 人元司令 (rényuán sīlìng) school with residual stems: 子 — 癸壬, 卯 — 乙甲, 午 — 丁丙己, 酉 — 辛庚, 亥 — 壬甲戊. The canonical “one-two-three stems” table (子 — 癸, 卯 — 乙, 午 — 丁己, 酉 — 辛, 亥 — 壬甲) is known and considered as a variant; the engine version a chart was calculated with is stored in the chart itself.
Day Master strength (日主, rìzhǔ)
Two methods, then their reconciliation.
Classical — the three traditional criteria. 得令 (délìng), obtaining the season: the relation of the ruling stem of the month (司令, sīlìng) to the Day Master's element. 得地 (dédì), obtaining the ground: a root (根, gēn) — the same element among the hidden stems of any of the four pillars, or a seasonal (方), triangular (三合) or paired (六合) union of branches that yields that element; the resource does not count as a root, or the criterion would merge with the first. 得势 (déshì), obtaining power: supporting open stems of the year, month and hour outnumber the weakening ones; the Day Master itself is not counted.
Dynamic — the share of the Day Master's own element and its resource element in a weighted balance: every open and hidden stem enters with a weight by its position in the pillar, multiplied by the seasonal coefficient of its element for the month branch (the 旺相休囚死, wàng xiāng xiū qiú sǐ matrix). The weights, coefficients and thresholds are part of the author's method and are not given here.
Reconciliation. When the methods agree, that is the verdict. When they disagree, the classical one decides: the month command and the roots weigh more than flat shares; the dynamic one prevails only at extreme values. Without the hour of birth the assessment uses three pillars, and the chart says in how many of the possible hours the verdict holds.
The “Element balance” bar on the chart is a different thing: a plain count of signs, where every open stem and every branch gives one point to its element (for a branch, the element of its main hidden stem); with the hour unknown, the hour pillar is not counted.
Stars and interactions
- 天乙贵人 (tiānyǐ guìrén) — by the rhyme “甲戊庚牛羊,乙己鼠猴乡,丙丁猪鸡位,壬癸兔蛇藏,六辛逢马虎” from 三命通会 (Sānmìng tōnghuì), from the day stem.
- 羊刃 (yángrèn) — for yang stems by the 帝旺 (dìwàng) stage: 甲卯, 丙午, 戊午, 庚酉, 壬子. For yin stems the variant by the 冠带 (guàndài) stage is enabled: 乙辰, 丁未, 己未, 辛戌, 癸丑. Not every school recognises the yin 羊刃.
- 六合 (liùhé) of the pair 午未 gives Fire; some texts say Earth.
- 合化 (héhuà) of stems. A transformation counts only with the support of the month branch; the Year–Day pair must be adjacent. The conditions are softer than the canon: breaking stems are not checked.
- Life Palace (命宫, mìnggōng) — after 三命通会: from 子 backwards to the month, from there forwards to 卯; the month is taken by the sectional term, not by 中气.
- Luck pillars (大运, dàyùn). Direction by gender and the polarity of the year; the start from the distance to the sectional term, three days per year; age in full years.
- Whole-pillar transits. 伏吟 (fúyín) — the transit pillar repeats the natal one. 反吟 (fǎnyín) — the same stem with clashing branches, the opposite pillar in the cycle of sixty: 甲子 and 甲午. 天克地冲 (tiānkè dìchōng) — the stems control each other in either direction with clashing branches: 甲子 and 庚午. Some texts use one word for 反吟 and 天克地冲; here they are kept apart so that one pillar is not counted twice. 岁运并临 (suìyùn bìnglín) — the year pillar equals the current luck pillar — is flagged in the yearly plan.
- Symbolic stars (神煞, shénshā). More than seventy stars; those not confirmed by a primary source are marked in the app as the author's reconstruction and carry no weight of the classical ones in readings.
Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲)
- School — hour Qi Men (時家奇門, shíjiā qímén), the rotating plate (轉盤, zhuànpán), the 拆補 (chāibǔ) method: the yuan by the 符頭 day branch that opens the five-day block. The 茅山 (máoshān) method without an inserted yuan (無閏) is in the settings; the 置閏 (zhìrùn) method is not implemented.
- Centre (中五). Registered in 坤 2 (寄坤, variant A, the default) or in 艮 8 (寄艮, variant B). The star 天禽 (tiānqín) always travels with its companion, the star of the registration palace; the centre stem becomes the second stem of that palace.
- Eight Spirits (八神, bāshén) — 值符, 螣蛇, 太阴, 六合, 白虎, 玄武, 九地, 九天; the variant with 勾陳 and 朱雀 is not used.
- The Horse (馬星, mǎxīng) — from the day branch by default; from the hour branch in the settings.
- Structures (格局, géjú). The implemented structures are listed in the app's library, each with its condition as a formula. The 十干克應 (shígān kèyìng) format reads “heavenly stem over earthly stem”.
- Void (空亡, kōngwáng) — by the decade (旬, xún) of the hour and of the day.
- 六儀擊刑 (liùyí jīxíng) — both layers are checked, Heaven and Earth: 戊 in 3 (震), 己 in 2 (坤), 庚 in 8 (艮), 辛 in 9 (離), 壬 and 癸 in 4 (巽). The variants “Heaven plate only” and “when two identical stems meet” are not implemented.
- 入墓 (rùmù) and 三奇入墓. The grave palace by the twelve stages (長生) of the stem: 乙, 丙, 戊 — 6 (乾); 丁, 己, 庚 — 8 (艮); 辛, 壬 — 4 (巽); 癸 — 2 (坤); both layers are checked. The 陰干入墓 variant by the grave branch (乙 — 2 坤 by 未, 癸 — 6 乾 by 戌) is not implemented; the decision comes after the closed test.
Planner
For an hour and a task the planner rates each of the eight outer palaces and takes the best one.
Signs that exclude a palace for the hour: 五不遇時 (wǔ bù yù shí) of the hour itself; the void of the hour on the target palace; the door pressing on the palace — 門迫 (ménpò); 擊刑 or 入墓 on the palace; for tasks that require movement, all eight doors in 伏吟 or 反吟; for tasks that require quiet, 白虎 or 玄武 on the palace.
Signs in favour of a palace: the good doors in a 義 or 和 relation to the palace, the three wonders 乙, 丙, 丁 on the Heaven plate, the spirit for the task, favourable structures. Their weights, and the threshold from which an hour counts as favourable in this system, are part of the author's method and are not given here; every window in the app names the signs that went into it.
Double hours follow the sun, and the windows are shown on the device's clock. If no city for time calculations is set, the longitude of the place is unknown: solar time is taken by the zone's meridian without daylight saving, so in summer the windows sit one hour later on the clock: 00:00–02:00 instead of 23:00–01:00. If a city is set, the windows follow that city's sun to the minute: in Madrid in summer 辰 runs from 09:21 to 11:21. The “Zone time” standard in the calculation settings keeps the windows on even hours all year.
Where to see it in the app
Every rating in the app opens “why I see this”: the rule in a plain and an expert register, with its source. The classical texts and this document are collected under Profile → Sources. You can calculate a chart on the site as well; everything else the app does is on the Features page.
A tool for self-reflection and planning, not a forecast of the future: it does not diagnose and does not replace a doctor, a lawyer or a financial adviser.
