Winter Solstice — 冬至 (Dōngzhì)
Winter Solstice (冬至, Dōngzhì) is the 22nd of the 24 solar terms, at the Sun's ecliptic longitude of 270°. It is a mid-term (中氣): it falls in the middle of a BaZi month and does not change the month pillar.
Customs
The winter solstice — the longest night, after which the light returns: in the tradition, “the birth of yang”, the return of the bright, active phase, and, says the proverb, “a festival as great as New Year”. Customs: dumplings in the north, sweet rice balls in the south, a family dinner and ancestral rites; the count of “nine nines”, eighty-one days of cold until the spring warmth, begins.
